Best 3hr RT hike ever? Rob Roy Valley perhaps.

For anyone planning a trip to the South Island of New Zealand, the Rob Roy Valley hike is a pure delight. The trail is short and easy, and you get some of the best scenery in NZ. Certainly the best half-day hike (or entire day hike) I experienced in NZ.

Some highlight pics:

Swing bridge

Disappearing waterfall

Wow, just a 90 minute walk away! (at a leisurely pace even).

Keas are a native parrot in NZ

Nice spot to hang out and enjoy the views...

Cool blue stream, but watch out for overhanging rock...

I've done that 90 minute leisure hike! Thanks for the nostalgia, thats an awsome stroll through Mt.Aspiring Nat'l Park, I have all the EXACT same shots, except misty and raining (it rained on us for 6 straight weeks in that damn country). Those Keas sure take quite a bit of liberties. That drive in is somethin else as well, no? Lots of open ranges and really confused lookin livestock (we got chased by a pack of angry cows, I'm guessing for taking pics of a cool waterfall on their owners land. If only they knew they were to be slaughtered, maybe they wouldn't have been so territorial).

Having not opened your link yet, did you hit any other ”treks”? Routeburn was sick. Rees-Dart, Heaphy and that loop around Te Anau all look unbelievably appealing as well. By far, the coolest country on the planet, sweet shots.

Yeah, my full report has pics of the cows forming a guantlet on the gravel road in. That drive was pretty dreamy... Bummer to hear about 6-weeks of rain. We got rained out on the west coast, but had generally decent weather on our hikes. I did learn that rain on the Milford Track can actually be for the best, as waterfalls are unleashed on a massive scale.

As for other tracks, we did (in order): The Rees-Dart, Mueller Hut, Routeburn, Milford, and Hump Ridge. I have yet to write those TRs, but can't wait to re-live those adventures again when I do.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'd surely recommend a trip to the south island. So many tracks to explore...
