 My First 14er!

Well I have successfully completed my first 14er, and I already am feeling the addiction settling in... I am currently looking to tackle Grays/Torreys Peak this upcoming weekend.

We left Castle Rock, CO around 7:15am, and arrived at the trailhead a little after 9am. We began our hike at 9:23am. A few breaks here and there to rest and take in the scenery, I arrived at the summit at noon on the dot, where I enjoyed a granola bar and some cheez-its! I was about one of 8 people on the summit and had plenty of space to myself to enjoy the views. Unfortunately I about broke down in tears when I realized I left my camera with my boyfriend about .5 mile back, he had twisted his ankle and wasn't able to make it to the top with me...luckily I had my cell phone, so I was able to get SOME pictures of my first time at the top of a 14er!

The weather was perfect. I was wearing a workout tank top to begin with, and as we got about halfway up, I put on gloves and a light-long sleeved shirt. Luckily, I had worn a visor... I had completely forgotten about sunscreen, which is a MUST in these elevations! That's definitely on a note to self for this weekend.

The entire trail was easy enough for a 14er-beginner, and pretty much what I had expected from reading all the reviews. Challenging and a great experience. From Grant we took the unpaved road in my Toyota Tacoma, no issues there. I was glad to see the entire road wasn't unpaved though, or else that would've been a loooong 13 miles! There was construction on the road, and one of the crew asked if we were hiking Bierstadt, so I was glad to know we were heading the right way, he said we were about a mile from the trailhead.. This leads you to Guanella Pass on the right side of the road.. Plenty of parking spaces and there are toilet facilities at the trailhead. Not a cloud in the sky when we started, and just a few when we got back to my truck a little after 2pm. Overall, perfect weather, just windy and chilly at the top, which I believe should be expected anywhere you are at at 14,000+ feet!!!

Of course we had to stop at Coney Island (Bailey, CO off 285) for some hot dogs before driving back home. It was a great time, boy was I sore the next day, but totally worth it.

Nice job on your first!     09/20/2010 20:22
Good job with 14er #1. My wife and I did Bierstadt as our first, and also forgot sunscreen Good luck on Grays/Torreys!

Bierstadt was also my first (successful) 14er. It's a great hike and we also stopped at Coney Island due to some reviews I saw on this site. Highly recommended!! 8)

Very nice!     09/21/2010 00:49
You are going to love Grays/Torreys....especially if you like crowds! Just kidding, it really is a great hike. I am putting Bierstadt/Sawtooth/Evans on my to-do list sometime in the next couple of years. I'll remember to stop by Coney Island afterwards! Nice report!

Congratulations on your first!     09/21/2010 01:08
I probably passed you (on my way up) when you were on your way down. September is such a great month to be out, no worries about storms and start times.

I'm hoping if I go on a Thursday or Friday the crowds won't be AS bad as say a weekend day?? Any chance of that?

Nice!     09/21/2010 17:00
I was up on Bierstadt too the same day you were taking a few ladies from work up their first 14er. Congrats on your first!

Bierstadt looks like a good one to start out with. I did Grays / Torreys last week; I liked it because for the first two miles, the incline was very mild and reasonable before the steep climbing starts. And it's such a good feeling to know you conquered two 14ers in one day.

i was up there the day after you (saturday) for a final hike before the big one, bluebird day! it was my first time stopping at coney island, which i did on the way back ... a bit slow for service but excellent kraut!!
