 Wicked Wetterhorn - Matterhorn Creek

We up at 4:30 AM and were on the road by around 5:30 AM headed to the Matterhorn Creek Trailhead for the climb to Whetterhorn. The group included Mike (CO), Tim (AK), Bob (CO), JRock (CO), Stranger (TX), Greg (KS) and Rockchalker (TX). We were on the trail by 7:00 AM with the summit of Whetterhorn in our sights.

Ultimately only Bob and Greg would actually summit with the rest of us making it close but getting turned back for a variety of reasons. In spite of the aborted summit attempt, we still had a great time and were thrilled that Greg and Bob both made it to the top. Seeing them both come into view on the summit from our vantage point on the saddle was a real thrill.

We were back at the trailhead by 2:00 PM and back in Lake City by around 3 PM, heading straight to the Packer Saloon and Cannibal Grill for another round of beer and buffalo burgers. We had a great time lounging in the outdoor patio, basking in the sun and 70 degree temperatures.

The yellow!     2010-09-16 18:11:44
Yea the yellow is amazing and one of the best photos of Wetterhorn I have seen. We took almost the same picture from the saddle, but the yellow in our photo is much more dull. Awesome shots!

Nice Weather!     2010-09-17 15:35:18
Man - it looks like you had a perfect day... From the title of the TR, I thought you must have ran into the kind of weather I had earlier in the season; rain, snow and full cloud cover... Thanks for the photos, now I can see what I did!
