Mt. Sherman - Southwest Ridge from Fourmile Creek

I decided to go for my first legit solo climb today, and figured Sherman was well within reach and nothing too daunting considering I was going to be alone - sorta. I got started from Lakewood sometime near 7am and was able to drive all the way up Fourmile Creek to the 12000' gate in my VW Jetta - the road was very rough at the end, but passable. I headed out at almost 9am on the nose.

The weather report was favorable today, and while there were lots of spotty clouds, nothing was threatening about them. The wind was another story. Gusting well over 30+mph on the summit ridge, I was forced to squat a few times to maintain my balance. I caught a group of 4 who started about 20 mins in front of me at the main Sheridan-Sherman saddle and passed three climbers on their way down. I fueled up a bit at the saddle and started my climb.

I reached the summit in 1:19hrs hitting the top just about 10:20am. The summit was surprisingly calm given the wind on the way up. My thermo read 61F but the wind chill put the temp easily below freezing. After the obligatory pics and signing the log, I headed down to get out of the wind.

Total Roundtrip 2:19hrs, 9th summit, 6th in 7 days!

route is one that is causing serious erosion problems. This route should be avoided as all of Sherman is on private property and damaging the land may lead to a closure of the area.

Sorry . . .     2010-08-31 15:36:38
Guess I wasn't thinking . . . I don't want to encourage bad habits and I try to be very respectful to the mountain and the private landowners.

Agree, they need to close that for good...     2010-08-31 15:37:26
I've seen people doing that descent as well. Don't save .4 miles and help worsen an erosion scar. The number of trails all over that mountain is already crazy enough.
