 Mt Elbert - Northeast Ridge

This climb started as my wife's 40th birthday adventure. She then decided to invite other family members and to take our children. Training began in March and involved a three day summit climb of Mt Baker in Washington.

The Mt Elbert climb included 12 family members ranging in age from 8 to 66. Due to the early morning start time we scouted the trailheads the afternoon before. The TH by Twin Lakes was too rough to transport the whole crew to the upper TH so we decided on the Northeast trail. We left the campground at 5:30 and arrived at the trailhead at 6am. We were concerned about water consumption so we had the stronger climbers carry extra and cache it along the route. With several younger members in the crew we also carried extra safety and clothing items. The packs were a little heavy. We moved at a steady pace and reapplied sunscreen at the treeline. We met a gentleman that had camped the night before but could not find water for supper so he decided to decend in the morning.

We stopped for a lengthy break at 12,400' among some rocks and windbreaks. We made the final push and all 12 family members summited in under 6 hours. We spent around 45 minutes on the summit and descended in about 4 hours. I presented all the climbers with a traditional chocolate milk and payday candy bar after returning to the TH. Everyone had a wonderful experience and the information on this website was great. This was the first 14er for everyone in the crew except me.

The crew gender and ages were: M8, F10, F12, F13, M13, M15, F39, F43, M44, M44, F65, M66.
