 Dogs on the West Ridge?!

Real quick. My brother Stew and I took our dogs up Q's West Ridge this morning. Great route! We highly recommend it! Route finding is a bit of a chore, and the down climbs from the towers are more difficult than the climb up from them. We had a ride waiting for us at the East Slope TH so, thankfully, we did not need to back-track. Now let me place a disclaimer:I would NOT suggest taking dogs up this route.

We both have well behaved and capable animals and this route, although not too ruff on them, proved dangerous for us. The handling and passing of dogs on the tougher moves caused a few anxious moments. Stew and I's dogs weigh 65 and 55 pounds respectively, and while standing on exposed terrain kicking dogs can be quite the handful. So please, keep this in mind for this or any third class route.

Anyway, both dogs did great despite a few sore feet and scary views. Stew did awesome as well for his first Fourteener since Sherman at the age of 9.

So here are a few pictures. Stew's dog is the black and brown Lab/Shepherd/Dragon mix(Buddy) and mine is the German Shorthair Pointer(Denali).

West Ridge with Dogs????!!!!!     2010-08-29 15:07:25
Can't believe you took dogs up the west ridge! From other trip reports I've seen of the west ridge route, it looks difficult enough for those of us with opposable thumbs! I just did Democrat's north ridge last week (which is apparently similar to Quandary's west ridge), and there's no way in hell I could have done it with a dog. That last photo of Denali really sums it up--literally dog tired. Glad you made it, but I think you both owe your dogs some thick rib-eyes.
