Half Peak - Cataract Lake Approach

Climbed Centennial Half Peak on Saturday, 9 July. Weather report was calling for so-so conditions, turned out to be a great day. Used Cataract Lake approach, 6+ miles of gentle hiking with great sights and lots of flowers.

An interesting climb, confusing topography, a quick golf game on top (no not really), perfumed Texas girls near the base (come on, its Lake City) . . . an overall good climb.

Here's the usual Climbing with Bob trip narrative link for those interested.

Of course there are teaser photos:

Just missed you...     07/14/2010 02:30
We did this peak on Wednesday, July 7. Got a late start and just made it down from the summit before things started to get ugly. Isn‘t that final ridge walk a nifty little surprise? The whole approach hike was lovely, too. Didn‘t see a soul all day.

Also saw that you did Pt. 13, 811 and 13,832. Those were originally on our agenda, but the Honda Civic can‘t make it up to the Silver Creek TH and we didn‘t want to get strung out above treeline on the longer route from Williams Creek with the storms coming in rather early in the day. So we bailed and did Matterhorn instead, along with Phoenix and Stewart on other days that week.

Bunch of surprises     07/14/2010 03:31
You are right as to the ridge walk, a surprise when you see it and a surprise when it yields an easy route. I‘ll admit to that long sloped backside throwing me for a loop on route finding as I just couldn‘t put the pieces together until I broke the skyline . . . then it was obvious. But, even a missed summit on this one would have been a winner.

I too have Phx and Stewart on the short list, hopefully this summer, maybe, I‘m hoping. . .

Thanks for posting this...     07/15/2010 02:51
I have had an interest in this peak for several years and hope to get down to Lake City and climb it soon. Gotta love those Texas ladies and irresponsible pet owners...
