 Huron Peak - Underrated Beauty

Trip Summary

Mileage : 10.5 (From Winfield)
Elevation: 3895
Start : 06:30am
End : 12:30pm

Huron has always seemed to me like a forgotten peak. Out of the way and not particularly challenging. Perhaps known as much for it's proximity to the Three Apostles. But I have to say that I found it to be a particular beautiful hike with stellar views all along the way. No real need for many words so I will let pictures do the talking. Click on photos for large image (definitely encouraged on panoramic photos)

A panoramic of the basin as you approach treeline.

A little further along the Three Apostes clearly in view.

Huron finally comes into view near treeline

Approaching the summit with the Northeast Face still holding a bit of snow

Looking East towards Belford/Oxford/Missouri from the Summit ridge

On Summit looking North at La Plata (Center) with Elbert/Massive to the right in the disance

On the Summit looking Southwest with Taylor Park Reservoir in the top center of the photo

The Three Apostles

Experimenting with ground level perspectives.

For wildflower photos I like the near ground level perspective with a nice backdrop

Interesting shot looking at the trail near and in the distance (left center) as it enters the forest.

Did I mention that Green is my favorite color!

Hiking in the Forest on a great trail

Image
A picture of contentment, I know it looks like consternation but I am happy, really.

Back to reality for the 2 mile hike on the 4WD road to Winfield

Hope you enjoyed the brief trip in photos.

Still one of my favorites!     2010-07-12 10:13:33
Nice day Randal! Huron remains one of my favorites - perhaps in part to it being my first 14er, but like you we were treated with a blue bird day when I hiked this June 2005!

Great hike!     2010-07-12 16:35:13
I loved this hike too and I felt like it was one of the most scenic I have done so far. Lots of fun camping just outside Winfield was great too. Our hike had a few clouds but was a great day anyways. Great report.

Do you think a subaru outback could handle this road?

Outback should be able to make it     2010-07-13 13:38:37
There really were only a couple of spots that if you went slow and maybe a slight angle you would be fine. Otherwise I didn‘t see any portion of the road that requires 4WD, mainly just clearance issues. They were basically humps in the road so usually you can do better on those if you approach at an angle so your front bumper doesn‘t touch.

Agree - Huron was on of my favorites, too - even in the dead of winter! Nice pictographic sojourn up the mountain!

And hey! I recognize that backpack!!
