 Still snowy on Decalibron

Thought I would post a TR to give people an idea of conditions on Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross.

Knowing that the mountains got a lot of snow over the weekend, I chose De-Ca-Li-Bron to hike on Wednesday because surely there would be lots of other traffic over the peaks. No such luck! All four peaks are still covered in significant snow from the weekend storm. There are many tracks forming a solid trail leading up Democrat - but the footprints ended there. Many of the people climbing yesterday didn't have snow gear and did fine sticking to Democrat. Because I had gators, microspikes, and poles, I chose to go on to the other peaks. Two other solo hikers followed behind me. I'm not sure if my path is anywhere near the real trail in parts, but I did my best. While the snow was nice and firm when I started in the morning, I started postholing during my ascent up Cameron. The snow level isn't bad between Cameron and Lincoln but worsens around Bross. Fortunately, the other hikers had caught up to me by Bross, and one of them helped me find a trail to descend. The hike down Bross was probably one of the hardest parts given the snow. Sorry, I don't have any pictures of that part. I would say for the descent gators are pretty necessary, but microspikes aren't helpful at that point.

I started hiking at 6, summited Democrat at 8ish, and got back to my car just after 1. It was a surprisingly cold day and very WINDY!

To find something positive in the snowy conditions, it sure does make for even more beautiful scenery.

I guess that's why they call it Kite Lake!

How deep was the snow on the summit of Democrat?     2010-06-17 07:53:49
I‘m sure there will be significant melting between now and Sunday, but I‘m planning on taking my kids up to hike Democrat and was curious about the snow depth.

Snow depth on Democrat isn‘t bad for most of the route. Maybe 6-8 inches? It might be more near the top, but I wasn‘t postholing yet, so I‘m not sure. Snow got a lot deeper near Cameron and then around Bross.

Three of us are planning on a Sat trip, so your post was timely to let us know how much snow is up there after this recent storm. Thanks!
