 3 peaks in 2 days

After Redcloud/Sunshine, the next day we planned on Handies. We were dragging a bit and didn't get on the way until 5 am. So we reached the trailhead and started climbing at about 6am. If you leave from Lake City, plan on a hour and a half to get to the trailhead. We averaged about 15 mph on that road. The stream was too big to cross, plus there was a car parked in front of it, so we walked from the lower trailhead. We were lazy and decided against the big packs and snowshoes for this hike, since we didn't need them on Redcloud. However, the overnight temp did not get down to freezing, so a lot of the snow was pretty soft. Mainly at the beginning and end of a snowfield, but sometimes in the middle too. We did a lot of post holing in areas. Most of the trail was covered in snow, so we had to make our own trail as we went along. Image Finally, we got out of the snow and onto prairie like ground, although we still had to walk straight up to avoid the snow on the trail. Image We didn't reach the summit until 1040. We spent a half hour up there as the weather was so nice. The whole trip there was minimal wind. Image Image The trip down was lots of fun with plenty of glissading.
