I made a spur of the moment decision to attempt Belford and left home Friday evening. I threw all my stuff in the car and left without checking the weather forecast. The road to the TH is completely dry. I slept in my jeep in the fetal position. It snowed off and on all night. I set my alarm for 5 am and naturally didn't wake up until 7:45.
I started booting it up the trail.
I crossed the stream and started skinning shortly after.
My objective for the day comes into view.
I hightailed it on up, closely following the path of the standard route.
A look down the gulch
Mrwaffles summits.
I skied down the gully NW? of the summit. The lower half of chute is not steep enough to slide, but the one side slope was loaded nut deep. I checked it out on the way up and it wasn't reactive.
Powder Turns were had in May.
A look back up
I skied down to treeline and booted out from there.
BAH
I drove into Leadville. Warning: There's a sign on 24 advertising 2 burgers for 3$ at Wild Bills. That special does not exist. I ate and drove to South Elbert TH to meet up with Clemsonmntr and Jmoney and had another great day on Sunday.
It was cloudy up on the summit of Belford, but here is what the Sawatch looked like from Elbert the following day:
Maycember?
It looks there's still gonna be plenty of skiing for a while. I'm off to PA to work for the summer, so until next year...
