Attempt up Dead Dog - "shelf`y, nerve wracking snow"

Josh and I kicked off the morning's hike at 4am from a mid-way point between the winter-summer trailheads. It was a beautiful morning with clear skies all the way up until about 7am where we had views of the couloir. Image Image

At this point we discussed hiking Kelso, but my climbing partner was feeling it and wanted to check out the couloir. As we neared the apron, Josh just wasn't feeling it, so decided to rest in the valley. I headed up to test out the conditions. Wound up breaking trail for a couple of hours and made it to 13,650ft, where the snow started peeling off in layers (3", 6", 8" slabs).

Met up with two other climbers, Travis and Sam, who helped steady my nerves and we climbed a bit and descended together. The snow was getting really saturated by 10:30am.

We were all happy with our decision to turn back with the questionable conditions and deteriorating weather. A great saturday!

The Dead Dog deserves respect. You‘ll be back another day, I‘m sure.
