 First taste of the Elks

On Saturday I decided to try for Castle/Conundrum. I turned back due to avy danger, but not before making a considerable inroad into the gulch and enjoying some insane views. SP album/mini-TR:

Great trip.     2010-04-12 18:24:19
What a cool place to be in Spring!

Maybe a tad early for that one, but you came home with some great images.

And a solo trip, no less; that certainly garners respect! Way to go, Michael!

@ mountainmicah -- I noticed I wasn‘t the only one whose summit plans were foiled by avy conditions. That‘s Ok, though. On a day like that I‘m just happy to be in the mountains

@ steve -- I guess that means I don‘t have much time to go back for the summits!

For a day, you owned the basin! Pretty cool, eh? In 4 weeks, it‘ll be tough to find a place to park. Lou Dawson has referred to your trip to that upper TH as ”The journey through the valley of death.” Way to go, keeping your wits and still having an awesome day!

@ bjohnson -- sometimes the solitude gets spooky. In this case it was just awesome. The slides had me doubting but it was nice to hike in there as far as I did.

@ lodi -- thanks! It was a perfect day

@ Doug -- good stuff =) This time the headwall was saying ”GTFO”

Your smiley picture reminds me of when I climbed these same peaks back in '05. We knew that a friend/web acquaintance of ours would be climbing the same peaks the following day. On the way out we stamped out "HI JERRY" in huge, 20-foot-tall snow letters on the headwall below the lake. He was duly confused the following day when his partner (who was a little ahead) called back that there was a note for him up ahead...

Nice pictures. Looks like you had a slice of solitude and beauty on your hike. If I‘m not mistaken, it appears like photo #3 shows a slide area that I was in awe of last August on my attempt of the peaks. Amazing to see the damage from a slide. Good call on listening to your gut.

we are planning to go up there mon/tues and start from a high camp. Was there anywhere up near treeline that looked like a good campspot?

re: camp spot     2010-04-14 13:40:11
There are two or three good spots near treeline (although you can‘t tell you‘re near treeline until you‘re there) situated along the snowmobile/ski trail. Plenty of spots just above treeline as well where the gulch opens up
