Mt. Evans via the Grey Wolf/ Spalding to the Summit
This was our second attempt at Mt. Evan - last time we ended up climbing Mt. Spalding. With a little adjustment to the course, we were successful this time. We drove through Georgetown and made it past the road construction without much delay. We parked at Guanella Pass trailhead. The boardwalk as the trail begins We hiked in a few hundred yards to the small clearing where there is a two posts in the ground about 30 yards apart. At the spot of the first post go directly to the left over the small hill with a little clearing and some rocks. Continue on this route for a few minutes and go to the left of the small lake. As you head around behind this lake you should see a clear trail. On the trail headed to the trees in front on the left Follow this to a patch of trees. You will pass what I call the Moses Rock Moses Rock - it has a large crack in it. Keep hiking up the trail and through the trees on a nice trail. You will climb a small ridge with a beautiful lake to your right. Lake on the right with Sawtooth in the background Reach the top of the ridge just above treeline and continued up the drainage a ways. stay left a bit and then climb this large ridge We went right over this larger ridge and came to the open incline that leads to Mt. Evans. I shouldn't say trail because there really isn't one after a few miles in, which makes the hiking a bit tougher on the legs. This is where people who have climbed the gully will join you. Keep heading up the open face and make for the rocky area on top. Then, traverse around the right side. Watch for the trail signs marked with piles of rocks. It is easy to get off track. You will eventually get to the summit. We summitted around 11:00 AM and mingled with all the people that had driven to the top. This is one of the few 14ers that has road access. We came down the same way and were glad to get back to the parking lot. It was about and eight hour trip. We spent the night in Georgetown and had a great breakfast the next morning.
