1st Winter Trip Report
12/24/2009 4:46pm
OK, now you got us all in the mood! Just twelve weeks left to get in those precious winter ascents... guess I better start planning. I love that ridge, done it twice on snow myself, but never in calendar winter. Good notes on avoiding the dangerous spots - I hope folks are paying attention!

Looks like the conditions were great for you. Thanks for being the first trip report to appropriately title itself as a winter ascent too. It‘s silly of me but all the ”Winter climb of...” trip reports that come out all fall drive me a little batty for some reason.

No kidding, it was just as surprising to us when we saw it. It‘s been driven enough times in the last few months to pack down, and there just isn‘t that much snow up there! Parts of the road are still snow free in fact, if I had pushed it I could have made it with FWD...

Lack of snow!

I was up there last Friday on the 18th. You may have noticed the trench I dug in the snow for my stove. I was surprised as well about the snow! I moved here for the snow! Where is it? I climbed Torres from Loveland and I think there was even less snow on that side! Well, Take it Easy! Merry Christmas!

We‘re thinking about heading up there soon to get a winter summit - your beta helps. Let‘s get some winter ones checked off!

Too bad the Elk plans fell through, but it looks and sounds like this plan B worked out. This TR has me pumped to get back to CO after a few days back in Maryland. Thanks for the update on DD Couloir.

Good report Ben, great pics as always. Surprisingly, the north ridge still looks practically dry as of this past Sunday.

The pics you sent from the summit made sitting in south carolina waiting for the wife to try on clothes a lot more interesting!
