 Belford-Oxford - Timetable, Crowds, Weather

This my first trip report. I use this site all the time and decided I need to give back more! I tried to upload photos, but they are more than 8 megapixels.

These were my 11th and 12th 14ers. I would say I am an average speed hiker, for a local hiker that likes to hike frequently and bag 14ers, that is. This entire hike is steep-to the point that downhill is not really a walk in the park. I stopped a lot, more so than I normally do.

Hiked in and camped by cabin on Fri 9/11. Left car at 8pm and arrived at cabin at 9:15pm. It was very warm (high 50s) and a completely clear night. We were in the dark with headlamps and had no trouble.

Left cabin Sat am 9/12 at 6:45am and got to summit of Belford at 9:00am. Also steep pretty much the whole way. Beautiful view of aspen colors! We saw two people about an hour ahead of us and then two other pairs about an hour behind us.

Spent ten minutes at summit all alone. Clear, sunny and warm!

Left Belford at 9:10am and arrived atop Oxford at 10:15. Passed couple we had seen ahead of us on their way down.

Spent ten minutes at summit all alone! It started to snow and got cold fast, but was oddly still sunny!

Left Oxford at 10:25am and got back to Belford at 11:30am. It snowed for our Oxford descent, but was clear by the time we hit the middle of the traverse. We passed about 6 people on their way up Oxford.

Spent five minutes on top of Belford again to get a pic from two guys up there, and then it started to get chilly and flurry again, so we left.

Left Belford at 11:35am and got back to the cabin at 12:45pm. We pased about ten people on our way down, half of which were descending Belford (didn't do Oxford I guess) and the other half just going up! It clouded up, thundered and sleeted on our way down, but there was no lightning. We were moving fast in case the weather worsened. It was hard going down such steep terrain fast!

Packed up camp and left cabin at 1:15, getting back to car at 2. Beautiful aspen forest! We noticed how steep this hike was now that we were going down in the daylight!

Recommend hiking to treeline. Would be quite the burner to hike from TH to TH in one day. Also, wish we had more time to stay another night and do Missouri since it is right there.

All in all. GREAT HIKE. Aspens were beautiful and a little snow with sun is better than rain and lightning! This was the latest in the season I had hiked one, and I plan to do hike up to this point again next year!

There was no snow on any of the trail, although it may be different now. It did snow when we were at the top, so warm clothes and gloves are necessary. I bet it is even colder now.
