 Mt. Evans- Summit Lake

This was the 1st 14er for my children Jim (12) and Julia (14). I hiked Greys peak 23 years ago. We thought it would be extra safe, because the road gave an option to get down if we were too tired. Even though it‘s a short hike, we started much too late- 10 AM. It was beautiful at Summit Lake, we made a short walk up the road, and found the trail quite easily. Picking our way up the mountain was fun. As we neared the parking lot of Mt. Evans road, the sky became dark and gloomy. Then some small hail. We hustled up the final switch backs (my son fell on his face, but was OK), and made it to the summit right at about the time the thunder started (noon.) We hustled back to the parking lot, now getting pummeled with hail, and stuck up our thumbs while looking as cold and forlorn as possible. Although some kind people drove us back down to Summit Lake, we definitely learned our lesson. On our next climb, we started much earlier!
