Peak: Mt. Buckskin, CO (13,865')
Date: Wednesday, February 7, 2007 Team: USAKeller, USAKeller's dad, TalusMonkey's evil twin brother Route: Kite Lake Rd USAKeller and her dad picked up TalusMonkey's evil twin brother in Lakewood at 0445 and they headed for Alma. After a brief stop in Frisco, they arrived at the Kite Lake winter closure at 0655. The party geared up and got on trail about 0710. The snow closure is at N39deg 17m40.7s, W106deg 06m18.1m - 2.8 miles from Alma. The remaining road to Kite Lake is about 3 miles. The temperature at the TH at 0700 was 32 degrees. Their group hiked the occassionally snow covered road in relative comfort - other than an only mildly annoying headwind breeze. Snowshoes were not necessary on any of the road. Although there are several snow covered segments, most of the road is exposed and dry. They made good time on the road and soon arrived at the restroom at the Kite Lake parking area. Apparently, snow enters the vent tube of the structure, or the wind blew the door open at some point this winter. There is currently a large stone holding the door shut. Although there are few snow covered areas down low, most of the route above 12,400 is wind scoured. This photo shows the approximate and recommended route from Kite Lake:

The group arrived on the summit at 1055 to relatively calm air and warming sunshine. This photo shows them on the Buckskin summit with Democrat, Cameron and Lincoln in the background: 
The party began their descent at 1109 and returned to the car at 1339. It was quite warm walking down the Kite Lake Rd in the sun. 45 degrees back at the TH. Buckskin lived up to its reputation as a relatively easy winter centennial - with good access and only 3,200' of elevation gain. The party even found a few short glissades on the way back to Kite Lake. Thanks SarahT for the road and route info from a few weeks ago! | |||
