Well this my first report here so...
The second attempt at HC after nearly 2 yrs of waiting. Zach(eatinhardtack) and I attempted the trip in Sept. '07 but were pushed back by bad weather above tree line and a steady downpour the previous night while camping above E. Cross Creek, which dampened our spirits as much as our gear and bodies.
This time turned out much better. We couldn't have asked for better weather. We hit the trail at about 530am and kept a steady pace to ECC. We packed light and made good time...that is up until the bolder field. It was slow going but a fun scramble up.
I've read about hikers from out of state getting lost on this peak, and often wondered if they just had poor navigational skills in the mountains...this trip completely changed my perception, as Zach and I wandered/hopped/crawled/cursed the talus for longer than we care to remember before finally finding our way back to the trail. Then the gain coming back up from the creek really put a drain on us, and aside from the summit and it's terrific views, seeing the trailhead sing and our two vehicles was the most amazing thing we saw in a long day on a long trail. I've since done hikes nearly as long in snow, and vowed to skin and ride anything like that again!
