 Castle update

Just a quick FYI on the road, the bridge and the snow on Castle Peak.

The road is pretty chewed up, especially the higher you get. I was in a Mercury Mariner (same as a Ford Escape) and made it a few hundred yards past the bridge, but was reluctant to go higher. Higher clearance vehicles (Jeeps, trucks, Rovers, 4Runners, Exterras, etc) should have no problem, but it will keep you on your toes.

The bridge was scary. Not because of the water level, but because of the approach and loose boards on the lower side. Crossing it from above was not so bad. It is currently crossable, but not sure if it will hold up. There were at least 5 vehicles that I saw besides mine that went past the bridge. Sorry, I didn‘t take a picture.

I did take a picture of the headwall & will attach it. I had no trouble walking up the snow (standard route) with Kahtoula‘s on. If you‘re not familiar - they are something between Yak Trax and true crampons. Overall, I made good time - up in 2 hours including the long hike up the road from just above the bridge.

The snow is really getting slushy and dirty. And there are a lot of little rocks in it. I glissaded down X 2 as mentioned in the guide book and it was no fun. I tore the seat of my pants in a couple of places, got real wet, and real dirty. The Kahtoula‘s helped control the glissade, but I was wishing I had ice axes. It sure made for a quick descent though!
