 1st summit of the year

We decided at about 9:30 Friday night that we were going to go hike Huron in the morning. My wife worked at 3:30am that morning so she went to bed and I packed our stuff. We woke up at 4:00am Saturday and left our place in Silverthorne at 4:30. The 4x4 road up from Winfield was a little rocky and narrow but was no problem for the Xterra. We reached the end by 6:30 and were hiking shortly after. The trail through the woods was really pretty and mellow.

Shortly after leaving treeline you get a great veiw of where your headed...

and the three apostles...

Also, looking behind you, you can look at the Southwest Ridge route up La Plata. We did that last summer and it was a really nice hike.

As the trail turns back toward Huron its not very steep.

and before long we reached the flat snow fields that needed to be crossed. They were a little soft, but never sunk more than ankle deep.

Our dog daisy stopped to rest in the snow before the long uphill push to the top.

After leaving the snow and heading up the ridge the trail was quite wet in spots. Here is a picture looking down the trail.

Eventually the trail disappeared into some snow. We chose to head straight up the short snow slope until we hit the trail again.
Image
Once we arrived at the saddle type area Daisy took one more rest before heading to the summit.
Image
From that resting point the trail was much more rocky and snow in places made the trail hard to follow.
Image
The last little slope onto the summit was mostly snow.

And the summit shot...

There we SO many people still heading up into the cloudy skies at 10:15 when we were heading down.
We stopped to take one more picture with our Macro lens on the way down.

It started raining on us just as we hit treeline and rained the rest of the way to the car. We finished around noon.
