 Mt. Sherman via unnamed couloir

First trip report here, so here goes!

Headed out to Colorado on Saturday evening after picking my good friend David up at the airport in KC; he had just flown in from Chicago. We drove straight up to the trailhead in Iowa Gulch and got going. We pulled into Leadville around 5:30 and found the road easily with Dawson's guide. The road was as clear as could be, no 4 wheel drive is needed, or anything high clearance for that matter!

Unfortunately finding the trail in the clouds was another matter. We ended up heading up into the Iowa Amphitheater too far, so instead of back tracking down we decided to attack Sherman directly via a couloir. Took a nice bfast break and snapped this photo. Doesn't show anything, but I like it!

After we had made our way to ~13,000 ft the clouds finally decided to break.

To give an idea of how steep if got in parts:

We finally came out onto a flat between Gemini and Sherman. The wind was definitely blowing the higher we got. Dave decided to open his jacket and see if he could fly... no lift off was achieved...

We took another quick snack break and headed up to the summit. Here's me approaching the top:

Finally we made it to the summit around 10:30am. Winds were a howlin', a few people guessed them to be in the 60-70mph range.

After that, we headed down the traditional South Ridge route back into Iowa Gulch. After descending this route, I don't think we ever would have found the actual trail in the morning. The parking area is well above the trail that the guide book indicates you need to take up... not down. Regardless, had a great day, and finished it up in Breck at the brewery, so I have no complaints!

Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln and Bross TR coming up later...

Thanks for looking!

Ted

Nice route.     2009-06-24 18:36:17
I like the wind pic as well. It seems that mountain is always gusty.

Hey there! Thanks again for the pic, hope your day ended well. We ended up doing Lincoln Bross and Democrat the next day before heading back to the heat and humidity that is the midwest.
