 Missouri Mountain Ski

We drove up over Indy Pass again on Friday with Ollie and his friend Ari to tackle Missouri Mountain. After seeing trip reports from the previous week bragging about great spring corn, we had to go get ours. We hit the trailhead at 5:45AM just after sunlight for the steep but easy hike in. Even once we reached the bottom of the north face we were able to hike up the northwest ridge route for a bit before having to switch over to ski boots. After that it was a direct bootpack up to the ridge.

Reaching the ridge to the summit:

There was a bit of tricky steep snow traversing underneath a couple of rock outcroppings on the ridge before reaching the summit. We probably should have switched to crampons and ice axes for this part, but careful moves got us across without a problem and soon enough we were standing on the summit of Missouri Mountain 4 hours after leaving the car.

Tricky section on ridge (notice ice axe securely strapped to my pack):

Abbey Road on the summit of Missouri (we're missing Ringo):

After hanging out on the summit for a bit, taking the summit photo, and admiring the views, we put on the skis and made our way down the main couloir that comes down right from the summit. I dropped in first followed by Ollie and then Ari. We had about 1,500' of great spring corn snow and I enjoyed every foot of it! Back in the valley we hung out by a small stream soaking in the sun before packing up and hiking back out.

Dropping in:

Great snow!
