Beautiful Day on Mt. Elbert (standard route)

We hiked to the top of Mt. Elbert on Friday June 19th. James, Cami and I drove down to the trailhead late Thursday night and slept (kind of) in my truck on Thursday night. We started on the trail about 6:00 A.M. and got back to the truck at 2:00 PM. The weather was very nice... clear skies all day long. We couldn't have picked a better day to do this. I was a little worried because I had read that there was still snow near the top of the mountain, and I've never used/don't know how to use snowgear, but it turns out we didn't need crampons or ice ax or anything else. Maybe the last 3-500 yards or so, we had to walk through snow. It was extremely bright. The snow was packed down and easy to walk through though. There were a couple guys at the summit with just shorts on. James and I made it all the way to the top. This was his first 14er. Cami made it to about 12,000 feet and had to stop and turn back. But that's still pretty good coming from Nebraska and we're proud of her!!!

My dog spent the whole time chasing after varmints in the rocks. She was hillarious!! I don't know where that energy comes from.

Further up the trail there was more snow:

After, we stopped to take a picture of the mountain from the road. WE WERE JUST UP THERE!! SO COOL!

Cool!     2009-06-21 06:16:53
I happen to like the Red Raider shirt. Good report too, by the way. I can remember looking at Mt. Elbert on the way back to Leadville and having that same feeling of pride and accomplishment knowing I was on top of that bad boy!!! It was a little intimidating looking at it on the way to the TH though. Elbert was my first 14er too.
