Continued from Part 1.

I went to bed early and I woke up at 4:00 AM while Jason slept in. I cooked up some oatmeal and hot chocolate and started my way up to the saddle of Pt. 12,940-12,942. To reach the saddle from camp, I skirted the north side of the bowl where we camped to avoid some elevation loss. The snow was consolidated and frozen which was a nice change from the prior day. I quickly gained the saddle and started up the south ridge of Pt. 12,940. The were some fun class 3 moves; however the ridge was mostly class 2. I think this peak had the most fun climbing of any peak thus far. I reached the summit just prior to sunrise. The sky was purple while the Bells and Pyramid were pink. It was an amazing moment and one of the finest sunrises I have viewed, not to mention the sweet views of Snowmass Peak.

I quickly descended the south ridge of 12,940 and started up the loose class 2 north ridge of 12,942. Again, the views from the summit were stunning with Crater Lake almost 2,500 feet below me. I returned to the 12,940-12,942 saddle and made my way back to camp where Jason and I cleaned up, and hiked out. The hike out was much faster on firmer snow as we returned to the car at 9:30 AM. It was a very rewarding and successful Elk trip.

I always look forward to your trip reports since they break so far from the norm. Thanks again for the Chiacgo Basin beta last year.
