 Great day on Shavano

Quick trip report on my hike up Shavano today. Had plans on going for Tab as well but the snow conditions up top and the weather ruled that out.

Left the trailhead at 0530
Reached the summit at 0930
Back to the car by 1200

The route up Shavano was no problem and overall a great hike. I did not have gaiters on and the snowfield

was no problem. Minor postholing on the way down but nothing bad.
The snow up top for the traverse to Tab.

was already starting to soften at 0930 and did not look enjoyable at all. Guess I will have to come back another day for that summit. I made the right decision because a snow/hail

cloud had already perched over the summit and started snowing/hailing by the time I had reached the snowfield.

Overall a great hike up Shavano

and a great Saturday in the Sawatch Range.

#4 and #6 are looking at the summit. The snow was softening up quite a bit at 0930 but it looked like some good spring skiing.

I just looked through the rest of my pics from the trip and have one that may have you in it. It is taken from such a long distance though it doesn‘t really show much of anything. Sorry.

I‘m going up the left arm, and was only one heading up to Esprit Pt 13630‘ that day. Beautiful snow along ridgeline over to Shavano. Headed over to Tab, but just too tired after 200‘ of descent & knowing Tab would be lot of effort (to & back) and not knowing how weather would be. Was able to scout out & get great pics of Class 3 ridge from PT 13712 to Jones Pk though. This is 2nd time on Shavano where I had to skip Tab due to black clouds by 10:30a. Heard thunder on way down by 1:30p.

I'm one of the 2 specks climbing up the neck of the angel. Your dog looks familiar, and you may have taken our pic at the intersection of the main trail. I'll post a TR later regarding the angel route, after I sort my pics, but in general, I made it to the summit without hardly touching a rock, the snow was so widespread, and only during the last couple hundred feet did the snow become soft enough to cause annnoyance. I summitted ~9:15am. Also bailed on Tab for the same reasons. The softening snow made that route look horrendous.

PDMeier, do you happen to have any more pics with us in them? My party were the 4 specks going up the angel in pic #1. I'll check my pics, and no doubt have some with you on the mountain, after we crossed paths, as we went up the right arm, and you kept on the main path. We could do an exchange. :-)

Thanks for the beta! Are pictures #4 and #6 looking at the summit of Shavano? I may try to ski the peak soon if that is indeed what coverage looks like...
