 Delaney Gulch Route

My brother and I had decided we needed a good getaway from work stresses and we figured that Super Bowl weekend might be a good time to avoid crowds. We arrived at the Denny Creek trailhead about 2:30 and after getting snowshoes on headed up the trail. It was a suprisingly warm day with the temp near 50 at the trailhead.

We had a very well defined trail and were presented with a great view as we headed up the first steep section of trail.

After reaching 12,000 ft. we found a good wind break between trees and a drift bank. A little work built a good platform for the night and we settled in. The weather changed with some fairly good winds during the night and at 7:00 AM it was still pretty cold.

We decided against snowshoes as the upper mountain looked well wind packed. Ice axes were useful, but we found good purchase of our boots without crampons. The well packed snow also made for some nice glisading on the decent.

By the time we reached 14,000,(about 11:00 AM) the wind had calmed to almost nothing and we turned up the final ridge scramble to the top. The snow in the rock was not as well packed here and careful foot placement was needed in order to avoid dropping into any nasty holes

View from the top was great! Trip down was uneventful and we got to the car in time to get home and see some of the Super Bowl.
