 Southeast Ledge & Red Chute

5/11/2008

Day three, and I admit I was slow to start. The headwall below Twin lakes was formidable climbing, putting us on axes and crampons right away.

The Twin Lakes area was a pristine cirque crowned by jagged rock spires, and tiny little snow lines everywhere. We skinned up to the right gradually through thinner, scoured snow to the final terrace directly between Sunlight and Windom.

Yet another for the photo editing pile.

Because Windom's route faces northwest, we headed up Sunlight first.

I had heard that this was a unique summit, but still did not know what to expect. After a short detour through the rocks to the right of the 'red couloir', we were on the ridge again. Brittany went around, and was waiting for us dumb boys. To the right, there was a rock lintel passageway allowing a peek at a steep, icy, slanting ledge to the summit.
'Ish, I dunno, what is that, the shortcut?' I said.
We walked around to the left, over giant slab steps, to a tiny trap door, and squeezed through. An airy snow covered catwalk led across the southeast side to the summit boulders.

This one still needs some tweaking, but hey, you get what you pay for.

This view from Windom later in the day shows most of the scary upper section on sunlight's summit as the figure 7. There were also a couple of ledges above that to work down to the 'figure 7' ledge.

Descending the ledges to the lintel.

Good stuff Jarret. It looks a lot different when the snow is white
