Mt White 13,667
~12.3 Miles, 4800 gain
Jan 15, 2009
With a nice break in weather, I decided to head down to the southern Sawatch and climb Mt. White, next to Mt. Antero. I arrived at the Baldwin Gulch trailhead around 6:20 AM, strapped on my skis and was skinning up the trail by 6:40 AM. The trail was well packed until the Antero road junction at ~2.6 miles. From this junction, I had to break trail up the Antero road. I made good time as I followed the road to about ~12,2000 where I ditched my skis and started hiking up a snow-free northwest rib toward point 13,089.
Once I reached point 13,089 I headed southeast along an old jeep road down to the Antero-White saddle. Unfortunately, I had to lose and regain ~200 feet by climbing to point 13,089 and back down to the Antero-White saddle. At first I was unsure of loaded slopes further up Baldwin Gulch toward the Cronin-Antero saddle; however, from the northwest rib that I climbed, there appeared to be another snow-free rib that would take someone to the lake shown on the topo. This other rib would avoid the loss and gain of 200 feet, twice.
From the Antero-White saddle I climbed the snow-free southeast face to gain the west ridge. Once I was on the west ridge, the climb was an easy class 2 boulder hop to an uninspiring winter summit, where I arrived just past 11:00 AM. I spent about 20 minutes on the summit taking some photos, drinking and eating.
On my way down I decided to poke around on the northwest face for some aquamarines. That didn't last long, as it wasn't exactly a heatwave and I have no idea how or what to look for regarding aquamarines. I slogged my way down and back up to point 13,089, descended back to my skis, and had an enjoyable ski back to the car. I arrived back at the car at 1:10 PM.
