 Quandary Jan,15,09

The weather could not have been more perfect. This was my first winter ascent and I guess you could say that I'm sold.

Good times climbing with you Mike S.

On to the trip report...We Stated off at 8am, quickly met by Horton the Quandary Dog (Great dog). The trail was well packed almost all the way. Not sure how far maybe .5 to .75 miles into the trip we did a little post holing, We put on the snow shoes and continued on to the ridge line, there we continued the rest of the way without snow shoes. Did I mention how pristine the weather was that day, all the way to the top sunshine and blue skies. We rented some crampons from REI the previous day and since I had never used them before I put them on maybe a few thousand feet below the summit, they were fun to wear and I believe made the trip up that much easier. Don't get the impression that crampons were needed though, it would have been just as easy without them.

Anyway I believe a picture is worth a thousand words so I'll leave the rest of the trip report in that format.

Dinner after the climb of beef, beer and bacon stew was delicious.

Time stamp on camara inncorrect.

Snow looks hard, have any opinion about skiing Quandary, top to TH?

Not Skiable in my opinion     01/16/2009 19:40
The snow was prety hard for the most part, I wouldn‘t want to ski it.

How was the road up there looking?

road was fine     01/17/2009 04:52
The road right before the trail head was closed. Only .01 of a mile to the trail head from the parking area. Good luck getting parking if you are hiking tomorrow with the 60+. Hopefully you have amazing weather like we did saxmotor.

Congrats on your 1st winter climb!     01/17/2009 20:07
Nice job Mike and Mike! This makes your little Brother back in North Carolina a little jealous. Glad you had some great weather for the day. Who does the dog belong too?

Horton....     01/20/2009 07:09
You were seen as worthy of Horton‘s company. The first time I tried Quandary, Horton did not show up and we failed. The second time he met us a tree line and we knew we were set for the summit....congratulations on a winter Quandary summit.
