 North Face ‘08

6/01/2008

I considered the route to Bierstadt via the Eupallet saddle on the Mt. Evans road. It had made a sporty summer route, but it was really dry, and rocky: unappealing for snowboarding. I drove down to Idaho Springs, up to Georgetown, and Guenella Pass. This side was not looking too good either. There could still be snow cover on the Face over Frozen Lake though, as I had seen from Kenosha Pass a few weeks ago. I camped down the pass, and returned in the morning.

On the rocky upper slopes, a snowshoe trail picked a good line to the summit cornice. I was looking at trying to wrap around to the cirque below the Sawtooth, so marked out a detour from the snowshoe trail with snow cairns.

The run to Frozen Lake looking a little bony.

I followed the snowshoe trail off the ridge, and cut hard right to follow my snow cairns to the open slopes of the north cirque.

This turned out to be a great run, and I was able to ride to the pit of the basin with a traverse left over a large bench.

I split and kicked down the creek bed, finally getting my fair dose of the willows.
Glad this was not running.
