 East Face ‘04

5/29/2004

I was shut down by some nasty weather a couple weeks ago (earlier) on a Wetterhorn attempt.

After driving from Gunnison, I was back and skinning up the North Fork of Henson Creek by 3:30 AM. I made better time without the overnight pack, and sticky afternoon snow. I was well into upper Matterhorn basin by sunhit. The temps were colder this week. The freeze last night was not as good, but with the previous trend being better, the snow would still be safe. I found this to be true for the snow above treeline. Things were locked up tight. At the southeast ridge, I fumbled with my water bottle, hearing it zip away down the slope somewhere (insert own explicative). As expected, the summit block was dry. I left my board anchored at the base of the sheer summit face, and scrambled the keyhole route to the top. This was my first 14er almost six years ago in the summer monsoon. I had seen a beautiful sunset on Uncompahgre later the same day. I would have to save Unc for another day. It looked a little dry on the west side anyway.

Back at my board again, the east face rolled away to a very steep pitch, then relaxed slightly. There were many great turns out on the skiers right side of the basin.

I cut to the east side of the valley, traversing hard to catch the trail down to the switchback for more turns. I split to skis around 11,200, and kicked out to the truck.

Thanks for the support!     2009-05-21 21:04:01
Just posted the last of them. It was something I think I just needed to get it out of my system. Anyway, hope it is all of some use in terms of people‘s seasonal planning schemes, and my apologies to those who may have mistaken them for current conditions.
