East Ridge & Cristo Couloir 2005

5/15/2005

Tim Halbakken and I left Avon at 1:00am. There was barely daylight when we started up the road from the TH on Hoosier. We walked and skined past the sign for the trail, favoring a path less spackled by pets (not sure if some of them were even dogs). We went a little too far around the ridge to the north, and backtracked to a skin track up to a Cabin. Tim started to posthole, but fortunately the main trail was nearby. Back on track, we emerged from treeline through several open glades. The slopes were busy with snowshoers today. It was a perfect day, and the ridge to the top was fun. There were a couple other folks with boards and skis.
a pleasant day in the city park

Tim and I were the first to drop in off the summit, riding left, to the Cristo Couloir. We immediatly noticed climbers below us, and paused to make sure everyone was out of the sluff line. I diverted to a rock lined section to the left, finding climbers in there as well.

We enjoyed a lengthy run with a sustained pitch. Brushy sections barely let us through, but we made it past Blue Lake Res with only a short walk on the road back to the car. We had lunch back in Avon. Then Heidi and I returned to Gunnison. Thanks for driving Heidi!
