We left from Oklahoma Thursday evening and arrived in Walsenburg early Friday morning where we stopped at a gas station a got a few hours of sleep before driving to the trailhead.
We arrived at the trailhead at about noon after some fairly easy 4WD. We hiked up to the edge of the tree line, around 12000 ft or more where we set up camp and the weather remained perfect. We got up around 4 - 4:30 and it was very windy and could tell was a complete cloud cover. We attempted our way to the summit where we got caught in extremely high winds with little visibility. The winds were close to 60 mph with 70-80 mph gusts. None of us could stand during the gusts. I pretty much just looked down at the trail and tried to follow the headlamp in front of me since it was all I could see. It was also sleeting pretty pad and light snow on the ground. We lost the trail a few times and had to take cover behind some boulders from the wind which would make us all cold from standing still. We realized we were in a storm and decided to head back down the valley to take cover somewhere until the sun came up to see what the hell was going on. We ended up going down and were so close to our camp we just went back and got a few more hours of sleep.
The weather never cleared up and I believe it stayed that way until just after we had to be back in Oklahoma. We think we made it close to 13000 ft, maybe close to the ridge but can‘t tell cause we couldn‘t see a thing. Fun experience though. 1st 14er attempt for 3 of us.
