Torreys Peak Trip Report 10/03/2008

Dead Dog Couloir
This trip report is A little past due, but hopefully great motivation for the up coming season. I decided to take advantage of the great spring weather and with the wife out of town I could seek up to Torreys and crank out a route that had been on my list for a while(Dead Dog Couloir). I left Denver around 4:00am and after some supplies in Georgetown, was at the fork of Stevens and Grizzly Gulch a little before 5:00am. This is all the further one could drive. There were several cars abandoned along side road. Got geared up and started up Stevens Gulch shortly after 5. Still a lot of snow on the road, I should have had skins and AT gear but did this in my alpine set-up. A party of three had two guys ATn' and made better time than the pace I was going, but because of the early start I was able to avoid postholing, so travel wasn't too bad. The one regret that I have is I was bit picture happy, so the added time of stop and taken in the view really aloud for the early sun to hit Dead Dog harder that I would have like to have skied it. If this is ever a late spring route that is one you want to hit, get to the top early! I dropped into the couloir just before 10:00am. By the time I was about a � of the way down it was some supper heavy mashed potatoes with heavy wet slough. Another � hour or hour and the run would have been no go. The party in front of me did the Northwest Couloir and had much better snow quality without the early east morning sun bake. They were also on the summit about an � hour to hour before me. I was back to the car at about 11:15am and was able to ski most of the way back on the road (with in about � mile from the car). Despite the snow quality be less than perfect, it was a perfect day. It felt so great to finally do this run, the conditions were safe, the weather was great, and I was home in time to get my wife from the airport.
