 Sneffels - SW Ridge

On the last day of summer the road up Yankee Boy Basin was snow free and dry right to the end above 12,000‘.

The hike up to Blue Lake Pass was still snow free, but north facing slopes at that elevation were white.

Looking down at the lakes from the pass

The route up the SW Ridge was also free of snow with only a dusting at the summit.

The North side routes would be tricky with the thin new snowcover.

Going down the standard route to the saddle between Yankee Boy and Blain Basin was snow free as well, even in the notch (which I usually avoid anyway by staying on the ridge just south of the gully.

A perfect last day of summer, including a short snow squall.

This little guy agrees.

If a picture is really worth a thousand words, then there‘s plenty of info here. I was surprised to see that much snow on the route. It should give SW ridgers an idea what they‘re in for.

Thanks for the contribution.

Hey Steve; Thanks for the comment. The snowy picture was looking down the north side from the summit. The SW ridge was generally snow free. You could have done the route that day in tennis shoes and had dry feet all day!
