Had an amazing trip up to Culebra Peak on August 23, 2008. My friend and I from Oklahoma arrived at the Cielo Vista Ranch HQ gate at 1:30am Saturday after an all night drive from Oklahoma City not knowing who or what to expect. Lucky for us 15 or so other hikers associated with 14ers.com were also tackling Culebra that day.
We were escorted onto the ranch about 545am, signed in and paid up by 6ish and we were on the trail at 11k feet around 630am. We summited by 1030am and celebrated with Art Patrask at the summit who had just completed his last 14er.
There is no defined trail to Culebra peak which contributes to its uniqueness and majesty. The "path" up is in absolutely pristine shape...the best I've ever seen...almost as if we were the first humans ever to step foot there! The ridgeline from the spire up was a bit more difficult than we were anticipating...lots of large, loose rocks but nothing too insurmountable for a class 2 route.
A BIG thanks goes to the 14ers.com group for looking after us and showing us a good time! We'll be back in CO soon!
