Camelback Mountain, AZ 2704 ft
Cholla Trail

Was down in the desert for a week and decided to see what options I had with the hiking scene. Given the height of the mountain it hardly qualifies as something worth a trip report, but after a couple hours on the trail I would recommend it if you're ever in the Phoenix area and looking to get out for the day.

There are two main trails to the top. The more popular (and crowded of the two) is the Summit Trail; also referred to as Echo Canyon Trail. The other is the Cholla Trail. The latter, being less crowded, was the one we opted to climb.

Both rise rather quickly with elevation gains of 1200+ ft in only 1.2-1.5 miles, depending on the trail you choose. Steep, rocky sections with big dropoffs on either side, along with 360 degree city views make it worth a couple pictures and an afternoon.

Switchbacks with an ever rising city backdrop make up the first half of this desert hike.

Eventually you come to some class 3 scrambling. A couple ridge walks against the sheer red sandstone cliffs were quite impressive in places. Rattlesnakes are common in the area.

The views from the summit are some of the best in the Valley of the Sun. Because of Camelback's central location, the city of Phoenix lays spread out in every direction as far as the eye can see.

If you're ever in the area it's worth the time to check it out-Nice little hike.

Nice shout-out to one of our local mountains! Probably a bit warmer than your average 14er, but glad you enjoyed it. I‘ve been up there plenty of times now and have still yet to see a rattlesnake, but check out your luck!
