 Bierstadt, Sawtooth, Evans

These were my third and forth peaks respectively, and an al arond quite enjoyable experience. My brother Dan and I arrived at the Guanella pass parking lot around 6:00 on saturday morning and departed up the trail around 6:15. Bierstadt was a rather easy climb with nothing too exciting to talk about, we arrived at summit just after 8:00. There were about six people on the summit before us and close to a million of them behind us, we just managed to miss the rush I guess, but when we were halfway up the mountain we could see both parking lots full and the road stacked up with cars on either side of the parking lots for close to a quarter mile.
We noticed that there were some clouds starting to build and we wanted to get across to evans and back down to the jeep before any serious weather started seeing as the jeep was naked.
We sat on top of bierstadt long enough to eat a sandwich and sign the log tube before heading down towards the sawtooth. The trip across the sawtooth was pretty much uneventful there was some rather mild climbing to be done and a little scrambling up some loose scree, but other than that it was just another hike. Some folks brought their dogs across which was sort of interesting to watch. As we summited Evans we noticed the clouds really starting to build, some rather ominous looking storm clouds that appeared to have meant business. After finishing our lunches on top of evans we quickly scurried back down towards Mt. Spaulding to make the descent through the willow maze. It began to spriinkle lightly on us while we were on the steepest part of the descent, but nothing too serious yet. We continued down into the willows. Initially we thought the mud wouldn‘t be too much of a problem, but we quickly realized that it got much wetter and deeper than we would have liked.
Within a half a mile of the parking lot after slogging through ankle to mid shin deep mud, it began to rain and then hail on us, we pushed through the rest of the willows as quickly as possible and rejoined with the bierstadt trail just before it crossed the creek, by now the hail was giving us a pretty good pelting.
So much for beating the weather back to the jeep, when we arrived we found our seats covered in an inch of slushy rain/hail and decided to get on our way. All I have to say is thank God for good wet weather gear, the entire drive back to littleton down I-70 involved us getting rained on, but surprisingly neither of us too wet and or cold.
