Nice cold Aug day on Shavano‘s Angel

Left Col. Springs 4:30
Started hiking from TH at 7:20
Got to summit at 11:20
(11:21 - decided not to try Tabeguauche)
Started down at 11:20
Got to TH at 2:20
conditions: cold (45 degrees, windy, overcast)

A good day all in all. Much better than we feared. After leaving Col Springs at 4:30 and driving through rain, and seeing lightening to the south...... we kept driving.....things did clear up in Buena Vista valley...

The road to the TH is easy, my 2wd Passat wagon was fine...the Trailhead is great with a nice big parking lot (and toilet!!). I think there is overnight camping available there, and/or on the trail, within 2 miles of the TH.

Well marked / obvious trail - though pretty rocky. I think it'd be a great peak / experience for a 14er novice (easy access, great views, not too hard...)

We hit hail at 830 - but kept pressing...got very windy approaching the "angel" and the saddle above (20-30mph winds?) - but the summit was calm, just a layer of hail/snow. Just goes to show - you gotta be prepared for weather. That being said, we were fine w/2 layers and ski hats (though my "too cool" hiking partner insisted on wearing ski goggles due to the wind 8) )

Since the summit took almost twice as long as we expected (it tookd 4 hrs, not the 2.5 we thought) - and since we couldn't see Tabe's peak, we bailed on the bagging that peak, and headed down.

All in all - great day in the mountains. Especially when I heard it rained ALL DAY LONG back home!!. But tell me again, "what month is it???"
(pics to follow..)
