 Grays from Stevens Gulch

A gray day on Grays. Overcast the entire time but the wildflowers supplied the colors of the day. Grays on the left, Torreys on the right, wearing the veil of clouds.

Someone said it would be just me and 200 of my closest friends and they weren‘t kidding. It was like Disneyland but good to see that a lot of people get out and enjoy these peaks, learn to appreciate them and take care of them. It was encouraging to see that, despite the number of people, I didn‘t see any litter at all. On the way up I passed three CFI members doing some pretty heavy manual labor on the trail. This seems to be a good organization, worthy of any support you can give them. This is a picture of the "ant line" going up the ridge to Torreys.

Summited Grays first, got a glimpse of Longs and Dillon Reservoir before the clouds moved in. Chilly, a few bits of sleet. Didn‘t think I would try Torreys in that visibility but on the way down I saw that Torreys had cleared and it looked so close that I buzzed up there. This is looking over the edge on the way up. I was really impressed with that sheer face of Torreys, seeing it for the first time.

Top of Torreys wasn‘t as crowded as Grays but once on top, the clouds had returned obscuring any view, so not knowing what the weather would do I left after just a minute or two. On the way down I observed that the CFI crew had done some real good work on the trail. One of the crew told me that the previous day had been even more crowded on the trail. So if you go on a weekend, get there early. I arrived at the TH at 7 a.m. and was lucky to get a decent parking spot.

About a four hour roundtrip, taking it real leisurely on the way down. No threat of lightning, not even a rumble.
Not the prettiest of days but then a cloudy day on a 14er is better than a good day at the office ay?
