Mt Elbert - Std. North East Ridge

Alright, it was my own fault but I didn't get to bed till 11:30pm and I had to be up at 1:30am so I could meet my two friends from Boulder. We are on the road at 2:30am and make good time to the region south of Leadville. The problem starts when the trailhead doesn't match my GPS and seeing as its pitch black, we are basically lost in the woods. I guess I really need to purchase the TOPO maps for my Garmin. When we finally come across some guy in a pick up truck who happens to be from England, we get some good directions and drive about 5 miles off road in very bad conditions. We knew we were close but couldn't get the Landrover any further up this steep road that had some serious washout. So after some debating we decide to leave the class 3 west face route for another day and start hiking with the masses. By the time we set off from this trail head it was 7:30am and there were quite a few cars in the parking lot. This route had quite a bit of hiking until we reached the treeline so that's when we got our first glimpse of what we thought was the summit. We were moving along pretty good seeing as this was Lori's first 14er and had just moved from Atlanta two weeks ago. Just when we thought we were scrambling for the summit, we get up there and see that its a false summit and then there was another one!!! We eventually get to the top like 45 minutes later, I guess I wasn't prepared for that
I normally take a whole bunch more pics but my battery was dying
It was super windy on the way up and the wind chill factor felt like it was in the teens. Surprisingly though at the summit it wasnt windy! The only wind was coming from the religious group but that has already been discussed in the off route forum So apart from that, another great hike in the rockies.
