After decending Wetterhorn from sunrise we walked into the basin below Matterhorn.

Decending the trail the sun climbed higher over our next goal.
There was a herd of Marrmots also basking in the early morning sunshine, maybe 20 or 30 of them with babies all running around this talus field.
Man this guy has the life, look where he lives!

A view of Uncompahgre from what i thought was the low point between the peaks, but I was wrong... the drop contiues untill you climb towards Uncompahgres south ridge.
I thought we would get Matterhorn too but its a long hard hike for all three, I‘ll have to save that for another trip into this amazing area.

Tom navigating the talus, in the attempt to save elevation loss and gain we tried route 2v in the Roach guide man what a mistake that was.
Wetterhorn and Matterhorn, the night‘s adventure of climbing in the dark seemed like a drifting dream compared to the hot morning sun.
Crossing the talus towards the saddle, it was fairly solid but the trail would be a much better choice for time and energy.

The south ridge below the summit almost there walking steadly we passed a few other hikers enjoying the beautiful san juan day!
It was much clearer from this vantage how far these mountains are apart. Although the trail between them is direct you get to see 6 basins and pass multiple other hiking targets. We were talking many times about how a high base camp could afford us many more peaks of amazing stature.
Looking back to our sunrise victory priceless to have seen both from the other 14er!

On the way down the trail was our friend. We were both exausted and ready for hot food and a long nap. The trail led us down, down and further down it seemed.
Every uphill step back to the pass reminded me how I need lighter gear. Its funny how the most painfull of experiences are also the ones that I cherish the most and remember more vividly. It seems that we are naturally animals of adventure and real life is forged through accomplishment and pain.
After a short nap and hike to the car we drove down to lake city had some pork briskets and chicken fried steak, and drove back to the front range by 10:30. Wetterhorn is one of the most amazing peaks I‘ve climbed, but doing it in one day with Uncompahgre was really hard. Considering the sunset sunrise shooting stars and two 14ers I‘d say its the best $95 and 6000 calories I ever spent!

Great shots, I agree! We have climbed Uncompahgre on Aug. 9, and we can‘t even imagine doing so after summiting Wetterhorn--well done indeed. Bepi
