 North Eolus and Chicago Basin Exit 7/31/08-8/1/08

(Thursday 7/31 continued)
Following the summit of Eolus via the south ridge we descended the east face to the standard route. Here is a shot of the next goal: North Eolus:

The east face only required a little down climbing. For the most part it consisted of ramps and steps:

And here we are near the "catwalk" on the way to North Eolus

I traversed around the point (seen in this picture on the left) between North Eolus and Eolus:

Once back on N. Eolus' south ridge the scrambling was easy on solid sticky rock:

I then descended North Eolus' south face via various ramps and cracks:

It was nice to be on flat ground again. Here we are traversing back to the lakes from the Eolus basin:

The next day we hit the trail at 8am to head back down to the train stop.

This bridge is located right at the stop and spans the Animas River;

I didn't know the Chicago Basin was so popular a backpacking destination! As we were leaving on a Friday, there was quite a crowd unloading at the Needleton stop:

All in all it was an excellent trip. We were very fortunate with the weather. The typical 2 o'clock clouds would come in but we barely got a sprinkle each day. And summit mornings were calm and clear.
