 North Massive/Massive via west slopes

Trailhead: North Halfmoon Creek
Start - 5:55am
North Massive - 10:00am
Massive - 11:10am
Down - 1:20pm

FYI - If anyone is looking for a great alternative to Massive's standard routes, try Extra Credit route 9.4EC in Roach's book. Relatively straight forward with some route finding in upper valley.

At the 1.2 mile mark there is a signed junction where the North Halfmoon Creek Trail turns to the right up Massive's southwest slopes. Continue straight at this junction. There is a decent trail most of the way up the valley.

Farther up the valley you will see the south ridge of North Massive with the tower at the end of it. Can't miss it. Aim for the scree slopes on the west or left side of the tower. Must cross a boulder field to reach base of the ridge.

There appears to be a number of scree fields leading up to the top of the ridge. I choose the scree field immediatley to the left of the tower. The scree is very loose, slippery, and sketchy. Make sure to have solid hands and feet before moving up. Be especially careful if someone is above or below you. The next scree field to the left had a streak of white rock near the top and appeared to possibly be more solid. Cannot say for sure.

Once you reach the ridge, it is an easy hike along a good trail to the shoulder of North Massive. Best thing about this hike is I did not see another person for 4+ hours. Not until I started on the ridge to Massive did I pass another hiker and the summit of Massive was packed.

Hope info helps a little.

I took this route yesterday, and the info on finding the tower as the reference point was really valuable. I appreciate the photos and the advice! Great day!
