 Sunday on Shavano

Something about Shavano has intrigued me so after finally getting used to a 4000+ ft ascent I made Shavano my top priority. I camped pretty much right across from the trailhead. I was sort of surprised to see huge black cows and their calfs walking around my tent area grazing but they seemed pretty harmless.

I started at 5am walking thru the woods muttering "here bear bear, here bear bear". Not sure if there are any bears in the woods around Shavano but alone in the dark is no way to find out. As I was moving through the woods the first thing I noticed about Shavano is how very different it is than most 14ers I'd done so far in that it doesn't really feel like your gaining much elevation but suddently at 7am I was at treeline.

After that its a pretty gentle uphill climb to the saddle ridge.

Once on the saddle ridge you can clearly see Shavano's peak.

I was pretty surpirsed that this was actually the peak itself and not just a false summit. Moving up through the rocks the trail sort of appears and than dissapears. After a while I got bored and just started hiking straight up but then found the trail again.

It sort of winds around the right side but any direction will get you there. From the bottom of the saddle ridge it took about 45 minutes to finally get to the top.

The best view is actually on the way down where you can see how far you really hiked to get to this point. I didnt' remember the hike from treeline being all that long but this picture begs to differ.

A great day. My favorite 14er so far !!!!!!

Those silly bear don‘t come when you call them? Brats!
Congrats on a nice summit Kevin - it looks like you had some solitude, pretty rare on a 14er in July. What‘s next?
