Wetterhorn and Snowboards in July! |
---|
After arriving the evening of July 4th, we set up camp at the trailhead (there are some nice spots here), we prepared to head out early morning of the 5th (6:30 am), with the snowboards. Needless to say a few looks, as we were putting on our packs from the other passers-by. Shortly in we were eyeing any possible descents and where we could drop those d#$m boards... The peak from lower basin Nice hike through the basin, great look at the mountain. snowboard shillotte‘s in the lower basin. We decided to drop the boards at about 12,800, because the extra 300ft of vertical would have kicked our asses at this point (more on the descent later). Started up the upper route, excited for the climb (our first class 3). Sam on the last section before summitJu Great climb, the description on this site is primo! Summited by 11am on top with a colorado coolaid Short visit with the two other parties on top, sign the register, and get some good luck cheers for enought snow on the descent. Now it was time to beat feet to the boards, to beat those pesky T-storms. At this point are legs were fried from humping those "boards", but we were trying to be stoked for 800 foot descent! It turned out to be a pretty good ride, even with the melt holes and ravelling. sam‘s Hawaii 5-0 Me posing for the camera. After a glorious 800 ft, we were able to reflect on the route a little tough to see, but starting at the top of the uppermost snowfield, through the draw (hidden) and exiting 100 feet above the end of the snowfield, right about at the trail. Snowboarding in July, gotta love it Time to pack up the boards, beat the storms to base camp, and grill that awesome steak! Made it back by 1pm damn! that was tough... Overall pretty proud of the 6.5 hour round trip, snowboard descent, and a great 4th of July weekend in the San Juans! |
