 Partial Ski of Maroon Peak

Crew: Just Me and my partner (who's not a member)
Peak: Maroon Peak
Route: Bell Cord Couloir
Date: 7/05/08

Here is a map of our route:

Blue = Standard South Ridge Route
Green = Our Ascent Route - (I descended this route where I couldn't ski)
Red = My Descent Route on Skis

For this one, I took the Andy approach, and made a video of the climb. The skiing was pretty bad, and I felt crazy lugging my skis all the way up there for those conditions. I decided not to ditch the skis halfway, but instead to keep them as extra weight as training for Rainier. It was also my first time I've skied in July. I hope you like it. I‘d say that from here on out, it‘s a good idea to leave the skis at home, unless you really hate yourself and your skis. (remember that youtube diminishes the video's original quality)

I'll add some pictures when I get a hold of them.

If I could give you a 6 you‘d have it. This is an awesome video, you are a kick-ass trip reporter to say the least!

descriptive did you get a glimpse of the standard route up South Maroon? I am hoping to climb the cord this weekend and am trying to figure out our descent route.

Standard Route     2008-07-09 22:18:40
If you‘ll be doing the Cord, I would consider just descending the Cord again. But I imagine that the standard route should be OK for descent. I talked to a father and his two sons who went up the standard route on North Maroon and down the standard on South Maroon. They said that there were no snowfields that were too big or too dangerous on the way down.

Rock Dodging     2008-07-10 09:28:41
I went up the Bell Cord with skis on my back about a week or two before you with plans of skiing it. It was so littered with rocks then, that we decided to carry our skis over the summit and ski the north branch of the Y couloir, which had a much sparser rock population. Good luck on Rainier!

fantastic choice...     2008-07-12 19:51:08
for the background score... an obvious choice, really. Nice report.
