 Hagar from Loveland Ski Area

Hagar Mountain and "Golden Bear Peak" from Loveland Ski Area
Partner: Dave Alex

I was thrilled to see Dave post for a Tuesday hike since we hadn't hiked together in quite a while. Dave and I hiked Crystal Peak a couple years ago (where does the time go?) and I wasn't able to attend his Ellingwood Point 14er finisher last year so this became a nice chance to catch up.

We decided on Hagar Peak via Loveland Ski Area (thanks to Layne Bracy's great route page on summitpost). I got everything together the night before but unfortunately ended up forgetting my pack. I had my hiking shoes, a soft-shell jacket, and my camera, and luckily Dave had an extra pack in his car. After a quick stop at the Safeway in Idaho Spings for water, food, and sunscreen, I was ready to go.

Hiking the Loveland Ski area was a bit weird, but it was easy to navigate after skiing there! We crossed the parking lot, headed up a service road, and then worked our way up under chair 4 and eventually to the ridge.

Once on the ridge, it's a short distance to "Golden Bear Peak" and then a very straight-forward hike to Hagar.

There was one steep slope before the summit pitch where the alpine flowers were beautiful! The summit pitch is class 3 and very solid. It was fantastic, all-too-short climbing and very worth it. The views of The Citadel and Pettingell were great.

Honestly, this is one of the best hikes I've done and I highly recommend it. The class 3 scrambling was very solid and fun. Great to hike with you again, Dave!

Thanks for posting this informative TR. It‘s always a pleasure to hike with someone as knowledgable about mountain craft as you.

”we” could remember our pack and to return loaned gear at the end of the climb.
Thanks again!
