 July 3rd Conditions

With no summit to report and no photo‘s, I am outclassed by all of you professional trip reporters. But having just returned, I felt some responsibility to mention current conditions. I departed the Snowmass Falls Ranch TH, on Wednesday morning 7/2, and just now returned to Denver. I was almost at the summit yesterday, I made it to the summit ridge. The log jam is as fun as ever, passable with the usual caution. I was on snow all the way from Snowmass Lake to the summit ridge, and one could go very nearly to the summit on snow if one wanted. My snowshoes with the elevator heels came in very handy. A glissader‘s paradise on the way down. I also saw two bears just below Snowmass Lake (right at the trail juntion) one of which was HUGE. Don‘t know what they are feeding those bears but they eat well.

Thanks!     2008-07-04 22:48:45
Thanks for the beta! Seems not a lot of folks have reported on it lately.

We‘re planning a trip to Snowmass in 3 weeks. Can anyone suggest what the condition of the snowfield is apt to be by then?

Will snowshoes or crampons be more useful? We‘ll have our axes either way.

I took both     2008-07-05 21:34:00
The snowmass was perfect, wideopen and crisp in the AM. I had both crampons and snowshoes and used both. I used the crampons for the traverse around the lake (you may well be on trail in 3 weeks) and for the headwall below the ridge. I used snowshoes for the rest of the ascent. Good luck!
